The city of Miami, FL is positioned on the Atlantic shore in Southern Florida and is the center of Dade County. The 43rd largest city by population in the U.S., with a population of around 420,000. Miami is the main and principal city in the Miami metropolitan area, and the most populated urban center in the Southern United States right after the Distric of Columbia. According to the Census Bureau, the Miami metropolitan area is the seventh most populous and 4th-largest metropolitan region in America, with a populace of around 5.2 million people.

Miami is a major center and a leader in commerce, media, entertainment and the arts. In 2010, the city was labeled as an Alpha-World City within the World Cities inventory. In the year 2013, the city ranked 7th in the U.S. in regards to commerce, fashion, culture, education and other sectors. Miami ranked thirty-second among international cities. In 2008, Forbes magazine ranked Miami America's Cleanest City for its great air quality, clean streets and city-wide recycling programs. According to a 2011 study of 71 world cities, the city was ranked as the wealthiest city in the U.S., and the world's 6th-most wealthy city regarding buying strength.
